I’ve spent the last few hours today looking at and reading the websites for companies in a radius of one mile from where I sit to look at how many of them have some sort of online advertising, either in the shape of ad-words or search engine optimisation and I haven’t found any yet. This pleases and dismays me.
It gratifies me since, as somebody operating an affordable SEO company, I obviously look out upon a target rich environment. It worries me because if I can only collaborate with a small number who see their website as an important part of their business, there are a number who are simply not going to reach potential customers, and may as well have not used their money on a website at all. And the expenditure may not have been efficiently spent anyway as I have examined and it looks that if they have paid a software consultancy to create their site and maybe host and maintain it for them, the sites are not even registered with the search engines so the possibilities of anyone using keywords to find the site are virtually nil.
One of the most basic parts of search engine optimisation is to make sure that the website that is being promoted is indexed with all the big search engines, and I would urge anyone, even if they aren’t wanting specialist search engine optimisation supporting and promoting their site, to make certain they do that. It is very easy and they should also be sure that their software consultancy creates a sitemap to insert in the registry so that the search engines can at least study the site and familiarise themselves with all pages and the relevant keywords.
If we imagine a business website we can see it as grouping into one of two classes. Either it gives a trading arm to the company in that it makes sales or can be used for prospective customers to visit prior to contacting the company with a view to doing business or registering an intention. The other class is 1 that is just for informational or ‘read-only’ reasons and maybe provides a news service but is not a crucial consideration of the work of the company.
If the company falls in any way outside the second group, then some sort of internet campaign is important because from some of the sites that I have examined today, there is nothing wrong with the firm or the website but they come nowhere in comparison to their local competitors which is found by the search engines by using some of the keywords used by the website. That is absurd and by employing an affordable SEO company to push their site up the results pages they will be more likely to get sales as a result of their website than they presently do. They do not even need to get me to do it, though obviously I’d like it if they did, but from the viewpoint of the local economy it would be sensible to maximise their website which is, when all is said and done, a business asset. For goodness sake use it!
It could be that they simply don’t know how and regard it as an inefficient blunder if nobody goes to them via the internet. What I reckon they don’t understand is that nobody is going to find a site by accident, it must be promoted and search engine optimisation would be the way I would advise it gets done.
